Toraja Sanggalangi Homestay

Great 4 night stay at Sangha homestay. The rooms are comfortable, average size without much space to put your clothes away, good sized and very clean bathroom and beautiful view from our nice terrasse. The staff is helpful, especially Anastasia who is more than accommodating and goes out of her way to help you organize transit and good. The food she and her staff prepared is excellent, banana pancakes with fruits in the morning and the evening dinner (though dinner is expensive, 100,000 IDR per person). The common rooms are big, setup with tables for meals and 2 couches. Scooters always available to rent. Unfortunately the guide we had for the full day celebration we went too was not great. Didn't have many explanations, his English was not very good and not great communication skills. We also never really understood what the schedule was going to be as the owner was very confusing when explaining the days ahead.

Alojamiento muy acogedor y bien ubicado. La dueña y la camarera son un amor, siempre atentas y súper detallistas. Cocinan de maravilla. Habitación con ventilador y agua caliente, además de con terraza y buenas vistas. La única pega, la cena que teníamos fuera del paquete de tours/actividades/comidas nos pareció cara 160.000 IDR para la zona.. por lo demás todo genial!

The hostel is nice, the food is excellent and the service is good (they helped me a lot to book transport, Anastasia drove me to the ATM, they are good advice, etc.). However, as a solo traveler, I have to share my experience with Peso. He is an excellent guide, he explains me a lot about the history of the Toraja and I would recommend him if he was not too tactile with me while I was alone with him all day. I did not feel safe and I felt very uncomfortable. He touched me in places I did not want to be touched and acted as if nothing happened or under the pretext of "keeping balance". He did not act like this when I was with other travelers. So be careful if you are also a solo girl, and I hope that my message will make him aware of this behavior.

I highly recommend this homestay! The hosts are wonderful! The food was fresh, plentiful and so, so delicious. The tours were informative and entertaining. I really enjoyed my stay and stayed longer than initially planned. Thank you again Anastasia and Peso.

Merci à Peso et Anastasia pour leur accueil, leur gentillesse, leurs conseils, et leur disponibilité! Les chambres sont belles et propres, l’eau de la douche est chaude, nous avions un petit balcon avec une très jolie vue. Nous sommes restés 4 jours chez eux, avec nos 2 enfants, et ça a été parfait! Un soir, ils nous ont accompagnés au marché en voiture et nous avons pu cuisiner dans leur cuisine des plats " maison ". Et le jour du départ, Anastasia nous a offert un petit déjeuner à 5h du matin! Un séjour qui a rendu notre séjour en pays Toraja encore plus agréable!

Passer une semaine au pays Toraja n’est pas de trop : il y a tant à découvrir ! Pour profiter pleinement de votre séjour, le choix du homestay est essentiel, et la maison de Peso et Anastasia est une valeur sûre. Elle propose plusieurs chambres confortables avec une terrasse commune où sont servis les repas. Anastasia prépare chaque matin de copieux petits déjeuners, et, sur demande, de délicieux dîners. Peso, guide passionné du pays Toraja, élabore des programmes complets pour explorer la région et plonger dans sa culture unique. Nous recommandons vivement cette adresse pour votre séjour à Rantepao.

Toraja is a beautiful region, but my experience at this homestay was disappointing. I’m sharing this because the pricing and communication around tours were not transparent, and it affected my stay. I was quoted 900,000 IDR per person for attending a ceremony of about three hours, in a group of four people. Since this was far above what I had paid elsewhere in Indonesia for any tour, I asked other guests about their prices. They told me they were charged different amounts for the exact same activity, from 900,000 IDR for two people to 900,000 IDR for one person. For me, this raised concerns about inconsistent pricing, especially for a shared tour where you normally expect a clear and equal rate per person. To understand the situation better, I checked prices at other accommodations. There, similar tours were offered for significantly lower rates, such as 700,000 IDR for a full day, regardless of group size. Later, I met other travelers who paid around 250,000 IDR per person for the same ceremony, including a donation to the family. Although I eventually joined the tour for a reduced price, the overall experience was not very positive. The explanation during the ceremony was limited, and the atmosphere during the tour did not feel very welcoming. Because of this, I decided to move to another accommodation which turned out to be a much better experience. My recommendation: check prices at several places before booking a tour, and make sure the cost per person or per group is clearly explained. Toraja has many good accommodations with straightforward and fair information about tours.
